I have also tried rebooting the system several times but that hasn't resolved the problem. Also, there is no Thunderbird process running in the Vista task manager whenever this problem occurs. I have been unable to find a “parent.lock” file anywhere for Thunderbird and consequently, have been unable to repair the Thunderbird start-up problem. I was able to repair the FF start-up problem by going the FF profile and deleting the “parent.lock” file as I described above. After rebooting the system, I was unable to get either FF or Thunderbird to respond as mentioned above. I was finally able to get “Chkdsk /r /f” to run from the boot menu command prompt at start-up and after running that to completion, I was able to successfully reboot the system. Numerous attempts to restart Vista, including using “Windows Repair” command during startup and attempting to restart in “safe” mode were all unsuccessful. All Vista commands were inactive and the only way I could respond to the situation was to power off the system and do a cold restart. The first problem was a Vista system hang (Firefox was open at the time but not Thunderbird). I have gone to the Thunderbird profile at C: ->Program Files->Mozilla Thunderbird-> however there is no “parent.lock” file to delete in that profile folder. I was able to correct the problem with the Firefox profile by going to that profile folder and deleting the “parent.lock” file. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Thunderbird process or restart the system". The message I received in both cases was “Thunderbird (or FF) is already running but not responding. I am running Thunderbird 17.0.5 under Vista Home Premium and after having some Vista system problems, I was unable to start either Firefox (20.0.1) or Thunderbird. ![]()
